Clarendon Hotel is the oldest hotel in Quebec City (1870). The Clarendon Hotel stands out from other hotels in the Old City by virtue of its architecture. Instead of resembling a “château”, as do so many establishments in this part of town, the Clarendon is a jewel of modern decorative arts, a combination of Art Nouveau from the Belle Epoque and Art Deco from the Roaring Twenties. Quebec City’s only New York-style skyscraper, the 17-storey Price Building, which dates back to 1929, is the Clarendon’s next-door neighbour. As proof of Quebec City’s fondness for this architectural treasure, the Clarendon Hotel was spared the rush to modernize the concrete jungle in the 1970s and was not subjected to the indignity of improvised renovations. The Provincial Premier stays in the Price Building when the National Assembly is in session. And many members of the National Assembly and government ministers have been guests at the Clarendon Hotel, making the hotel a kind of miniature “Parliament Building”!
