| A culinary jewel in the countryside... |
|
This thousand-year-old Moorish farmhouse complex, Hacienda Benazuza El Bulli Hotel, just twenty minutes west of Seville, has obviously seen a lot of history; but the pivotal event in its hospitality fortunes occurred quite recently—in the year 2000, the hotel joined forces with celebrity chef Ferrán Adriá’s El Bulli restaurant franchise, and became, if it’s possible to imagine at such a ripe old age, something of an overnight sensation.
As a hotel, it’s truly impressive, an estate as large as a village, with sprawling courtyards and two-hundred-foot palm trees, and yet just forty-four rooms—not your typical hotel rooms, either. Some guests may not go in for the décor, which is more like a posh, traditional guest house than a sixteenth-century replica, but few will complain about modern amenities like satellite TV and air conditioning. Rooms vary widely in layout and style, but in all, antiques abound, including charming twin four-posters and Moorish rugs, and some have vaulted ceilings or wooden timbers.
Anyone who misses the predictability of traditional hotel rooms, though, will be more than satisfied by the reliably professional service, and the public spaces are astounding—endless patios, reflecting pools, and lush gardens. The main attraction, though, is the cuisine, from the poolside restaurant in tented, cushioned Moroccan style to the flagship, La Alquería, a sort of museum to the cooking of star chef Ferrán Adriá. Essentially, it’s an El Bulli greatest-hits package, serving a career-spanning selection of dishes—an audacious concept, but one that seems to pack in the guests, and keep them returning season after season. |

Hacienda Benazuza El Bulli Hotel is situated a Sanlucar La Mayor, about 19 Km from Sevilla.
The historic center of Seville is located on the left bank of the river in a spot previously protected by the Almohade wall, of which some ruins remain today. It contains some of the most famous neighbourhoods of the city such as Santa Cruz, San Bartolomé, San Vicente, San Lorenzo and El Arenal. On the right bank of the river stands the Arrabal suburb. These are the most interesting areas for the traveller to visit.
The rest of the city is built around a series of expansion projects, the most important being that carried our for the Latin American Exhibition of 1929, built along the southern stretch of the Guadalquivir River. In 1992, near the Cartuja Monastery, a new area was developed to the west of the city where Expo 92 was held. |
