Lefkada, characterized also as "steriano" island, because it has easy access from the coasts via a navigable bridge that will impress you. Lefkada took its name from the Leykata, the cape that is found in southern utmost of the island, with the imposing distant white rocks.
The island and all the Eptanisa were linked with Greece on 21 May 1864, while they contributed decisively in the revolution at the Turks in 1821. Many important perdonalities come from this island as Ioannis Zampelios, Nikos Svoronos, Aristotelis Valaoritis, Aggelos Sikelianos and many others.
Every August in the Venetian Fortress of Saint Blacks, that dominates in the entry of city and capital of island, Lefkada, but in the cultural centre also, are organised the Feasts of Reason and Art.
You should visit the interesting archaeological museum, the public library, the museum of Gramophone, the two lagoons, and the church of Christ of Almighty where in its courtyard is found the grave of Aristoteli Valaoriti, very important Greek poet. You should also visit, the Royal, seasonal centre of southerner Lefkada, with intense nightly lifetime and amusement. In world fame Scorpion island property of Aristotle Onasi, there is the andrianta of rich ship owner that stands proud in the village. |

Vassiliki Bay Hotel is situated in Vassiliki Bay 30 meters away from the beach in the center of two superb beaches, Porto Katsiki & Agiofili.
Some meters away you will find the boats of Vassiliki fishing village and the traditional tavernas with nice atmosphere and a beautiful view of the small harbor.
Lefkada is separated from the mainland by a narrow canal crossed by a bridge and a road. Thus, you can drive into Lefkada, quickly crossing over the channel separating the coast of Aitoloakarnania and the island.
The Aktion airport near Preveza on the mainland is about 20 minutes away from Lefkada Town. Many people fly into this airport and then make their way onto the island by car or bus.
The two ports on Lefkada are Vassiliki and Nidri. Vassiliki has a twice-daily connection to Fiskardo on Kefallonia. Boats run once a day from Nidri to both Fiskardo on Kefallonia and to Frikes on Ithaca and from Vassiliki to Aetos on Ithaka.
Buses run every few hours from Lefkada Town to Nidri and Vassiliki, stopping wherever you would like in between. Just tell the bus driver where you are going when you get on and he will most likely make a stop there for you. Water taxis can be taken from Nidri and Vassiliki to the remote beaches along the western coast. |

By 2.30pm the wind can often be howling across the bay and it's time for those who can to go hooning out to sea and back and generally looking very cool indeed. Lifeguards are permanently watching and the rescue boat is not just for getting you out of difficulty. |
